The Philosophy Behind Tatcha

Tatcha was founded by Victoria Tsai after she discovered a centuries-old Japanese beauty manuscript on a trip to Kyoto. The brand is built around the skincare rituals of geishas — specifically the use of fermented botanicals, rice bran and algae extracts, collectively branded as Hadasei-3™. It's a story-driven brand, but the science behind the ingredients is real.

The Dewy Skin Cream is the brand's bestseller, promising intense hydration and the coveted "glass skin" look that has dominated beauty content for the last several years. We were skeptical but curious.

"I've tested over 30 luxury moisturizers in three years. The Dewy Skin Cream has the best immediate skin-feel of any of them. It feels like putting silk on your face."

Texture & Immediate Effect

The cream is whipped, light, and almost melts on contact with skin. The absorption is near-instant, leaving a dewy, glass-like finish that photographs beautifully and feels extraordinary under the fingers. It's genuinely unlike any other moisturizer texture in this category.

The Japanese purple rice extract provides antioxidant protection, while the trio of fermented botanicals (green tea, rice, algae) work synergistically to improve skin barrier function over time. The hyaluronic acid provides the immediate plumping visible on first application.

Long-Term Results

By week four, skin had noticeably improved in evenness and suppleness. By week eight, the dewiness had become our tester's baseline — meaning skin maintained the dewy quality even on days when the cream was skipped. That's the mark of a formula genuinely improving skin barrier function, not just masking dryness.

Particularly impressive: skin tolerance to environmental stressors improved markedly during testing. Redness after cold-weather exposure reduced significantly within the first month.

Pros & Cons

✦ Pros

Best-in-class texture and skin feel. Delivers genuine glass skin effect. Excellent long-term barrier improvement. Vegan and clean formula. Great for layering under serums.

— Cons

May be too dewy for oily skin types. No SPF. Lighter on anti-ageing actives than some competitors at this price. The dew effect can feel slightly tacky in humid weather.

The Luxe Edit Final Score
