Layering Luxury: How to Build a Skincare Routine That Actually Works
Expensive products in the wrong order can actually underperform cheap ones in the right order. Here is everything you need to know about layering luxury skincare correctly — from pH to texture, morning to night.

The Principle Behind Layering
Skincare layering is governed by two core principles: molecular weight and pH compatibility. Lighter, water-based formulas penetrate more readily and should go on first — before heavier, oil-based products that can form a partial barrier over the skin. pH matters for actives like vitamin C, AHAs and retinol, which function optimally in acidic environments and can be neutralised by alkaline products applied too closely.
Get this right and your products work synergistically. Get it wrong and you're either wasting product or — in some combinations — actively irritating your skin.
"The most expensive routine in the world will underdeliver if the products are applied in the wrong order. Sequencing is everything."
The Morning Routine: Step by Step
01
Cleanser
Gentle, low-pH cleanser. In the morning, a micellar water or very light gel cleanser is sufficient for most skin types — you're removing overnight product residue, not environmental grime. Over-cleansing in the morning is a common mistake with luxury routines.
02
Toner / Essence
Apply to damp skin within 60 seconds of cleansing. Essences — particularly fermented ones like those in Tatcha or SK-II — work best when skin retains some moisture from cleansing. Pat in, don't rub.
03
Vitamin C Serum
Apply on fully absorbed toner. Vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid) works best at pH 2.5–3.5. Allow 5–10 minutes before the next step so it can function before being diluted or its pH adjusted by subsequent products.
04
Hyaluronic Acid / Hydrating Serum
Apply to slightly damp skin for maximum efficacy. HA draws moisture from its environment — if your skin is very dry and the air is low-humidity, seal immediately with moisturiser to prevent it drawing moisture from deeper skin layers.
05
Moisturiser
Your luxury moisturiser goes here. By this point the actives are absorbed and you're sealing everything in. This is where La Mer, Augustinus Bader and La Prairie do their work — as occlusive-adjacent treatments that also deliver their own active compounds.
06
SPF (AM Only)
Always last in the morning routine. SPF must sit on top of everything else to function correctly. Apply generously — most people use a third of the recommended amount, which dramatically reduces protection.
⚠ Combinations to Avoid
Do not use Vitamin C and niacinamide in the same step — they can form a compound (nicotinic acid) that causes flushing in some skin types. Do not layer AHAs/BHAs directly before or after retinol in the same routine — the compounded exfoliation can severely irritate skin. Do not use oil-based serums before water-based serums.
The Night Routine
The evening routine follows the same thin-to-thick principle but with different actives. This is when retinol, peptides and richer treatment products earn their place. Cleanse thoroughly (double cleanse if you've worn SPF or makeup), apply any targeted treatments — retinol, prescription actives — and finish with your richest moisturiser or a facial oil to seal in everything overnight.
Night is when skin repair peaks, particularly between 11pm and 4am. A well-constructed evening routine maximises this window.
